Back from Mexico: Surf, Sun, and a New Start

Gina and I rolled back into Florida last Wednesday after two months surfing Mexico’s Pacific coast, from La Ticla to San Blas. At 63, I’m launching this blog to share my retirement reboot—staying fit, sharpening my mind, and growing closer to God. Here’s a taste of our adventure and what’s next.

We crossed into Mexico at Laredo in early May, a bit nervous but smooth sailing with our paperwork ready. Our first night was at a Pemex outside San Luis Potosí, then we camped two weeks in La Ticla, Michoacán, surfing daily from our Sprinter van. A nearby cartel presence—guys lodging in bungalows—pushed us to head six hours north to San Blas, a safe haven. We stayed at Hotel Alvarez, nicknamed “El Lobo,” a fortress-like spot where our van was secure. Mornings meant two-hour surf sessions, followed by swims in Aticama’s spring or Cascada de Cora. We ate local carne asada and whole foods from San Blas markets, dodging tortillas (nearly impossible!). Afternoons were for naps, and evenings, we cooked market finds. From San Blas, we drove 12 grueling hours to Mazatlán, Durango, and Monterrey, crashing with our friend Diana before crossing back. This year, I’m aiming to hit 15,000 daily steps with walks and CrossFit, learn Spanish for next year’s 12-week trip, and pray daily for my family—Gina, Mekenzie, Savannah, and my 94-year-old dad.

Tip: Start small, like a 10-minute walk, to build momentum.
